Holiday Programs

In 2011, the New Horizons Senior Glee Club launched their 22nd holiday season with a seasonal program under the direction of Selma Savitz, leader and pianist.

If you were "Looking For Mr. Santa" you could find him among one of the popular favorites of the concert.

'Preacher' Randy Shupp, bass/baritone, officiated over the "Wedding of the Painted Doll" while the glee club women donned their bridal veils and tiaras for the event.

Traditional favorites such as "Ave Maria" and "O Holy Night" were performed to perfection by soloists Jim Bracken and Linda Pennington, and virtuoso trumpeter Emil Pilacik rode up hill and down dale with one of the novelty numbers, "Sleigh Ride."

Three free concerts were presented for this "Most Wonderful Time of the Year" musical celebration:

Tuesday, December 6th, 2:00pm at the Masonic Village, 801 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA;

Saturday, December 10th, 3:00pm at Hayes Manor, 2210 Belmont Avenue, Philadelphia, PA

Tuesday, December 13th, 1:00pm at St. Katherine of Sienna Parish, Wayne.

From the 1929 film The Broadway Melody, the first sound film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture, the New Horizons Senior Glee Club performed “The Wedding of the Painted Doll” in two Holiday Concerts in December, 2010.

"Newlyweds" Jim Bracken, Sis Gilberg, Mike McDonnell, Shari Steinberg, Anita Beckett and Dennis Haggerty

With rumors flying about the demise of traditional marriage, 20 Glee Club ‘brides-to-be’ donned veils and bouquets to dramatize this vintage tune - just one of the highlights of the holiday concerts.   Soprano Helen Meyers soloed and officiated at the ‘ceremony,’ while the chorus sang the melody.  The lyrics told the whole story about the ‘dolls’ and the wedding guests who include such Toyland notables as Red Riding Hood, Buster Brown and Jumping Jack.

Other holiday program selections included: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Angels We Have Heard on High featuring the golden trumpet of Emil Pilacik, Hanukah, O Hanukah and Feliz Navidad, energetically executed with percussion backup.   Selma Savitz directed and played piano, while George Cocco, Jeanie Young, Anita Beckett and Jerry Kates provided the rhythms.

Capturing the festive spirit of the holidays, the 38 voices of the Glee Club sang a medley of fun ‘Santa’ songs as well as other musical gems of the season. The ever-popular White Christmas was given a special arrangement featuring an accordion solo by Ed Rifkin.   Tenor Jim Bracken delivered the awe inspiring Ave Maria in a stunning duet with Cantor Sandy Gold.  Bass-baritone Ron Scott intoned Little Man You’ve Had a Busy Day, and the entire ensemble concluded the program with the prayer Let There Be Peace on Earth.

The New Horizons Senior Glee Club, based in Narberth, entertains frequently in nursing homes, senior residential facilities, churches, synagogues and other venues.  Members range in age from 59 to 91, and have received the Governor’s Gold and Silver Award for service to older Pennsylvanians.   In May 2011, they will make their 5th consecutive appearance on the Plaza stage of the Kimmel Center in honor of Older Americans Month.
